Introducing Weekend Workshops with Master Teachers!

I’ve learned in my brief time here that Sacramento has an abundance of writing talent, and it has been my pleasure to teach private workshops and showcase emerging local writers via Stories on Stage. I still plan to develop and support writers by scheduling a third year of national and local emerging talent for Stories on Stage in 2012, by working privately as a manuscript consultant with writers both within and beyond Sacramento, and by hosting small-group workshops from my Midtown apartment.

However, I believe there are fiction and creative nonfiction writers in the greater Sacramento area hungry for learning experiences from what I refer to as Master Teachers, writers with rich publication and teaching histories, the kind of writers who teach in the best MFA programs and writers conferences across the country, teachers who write craft texts or edit magazines as prominent as the Atlantic Monthly.

Workshops will take place over a weekend, include both Saturday and Sunday, roughly from 10-4 PM with a 90 minute break for lunch. Workshops will be capped at twelve students, and focus on craft, narrative choices, and discussion of student manuscripts, distributed and read in advance. The weekend will usually include an event that’s open to the public, either a reading or craft lecture.

If you would like to be on the email list for these workshops, please fill out the contact form (link on menu bar above).

September 1&2, 2012

Kevin (Mc) McIlvoy is the author of the novels A Waltz, The Fifth Station, Little Peg, and Hyssop, and the story collection The Complete History of New Mexico. I refer to Mc as the manuscript whisperer, for his ability to both guide and inspire writers. Mc currently teaches in the Low Residency MFA program at Warren Wilson and is a regular faculty member at the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. He has a devoted following as an editor and teacher of writing, and a particular interest in working with mature developing writers.. The workshop will be capped at 12 students. The cost is $400. There are currently four spaces available in this workshop. To apply for the workshop, use the contact form and include a brief writing sample.
